Education
Education in Barnum has always been a high priority. From the first schoolhouses
built in the late 1800's to today's modern facilities, Barnum has made
the education of children first on the list of community support.
Barnum's educational system consists of separate buildings for both the
elementary and secondary students, The elementary school was built in 1963
and just recently went through an expansion project to add additional and
larger classrooms. While the classrooms are large, the class sizes are
not, as the philosophy of the education system in Barnum is to allow for
as much personal attention as possible with each child. Average elementary
class sizes are less than 25 students.
Barnum's high school facility was built in 1983. The facility houses students
in 7th through 12th grade. In addition, a vocational center for other classes
is housed in the facility. The new high school comprises the best of modern
educational equipment and facilities. The curriculum is broad and a wide
variety of extracurricular activities are also offered. Students with special
needs are accommodated with an extensive special education program. A community
education program offers classes ranging from aerobics to engine repair
to theater productions for area residents. In addition, winter and summer
recreation programs provide for swimming lessons, Little League, girls
softball, tennis and other activities.
The Barnum School District owns and operates its own fleet of buses for
transportation of students to school and for other activities.
