With numerous lakes, rivers, streams and wooded areas - combined with four distinct seasons - Barnum provides an enormous opportunity for recreational activity. The tranquility of the Northwoods, combined with the friendly small town atmosphere makes Barnum a wonderful place to plan you next vacation. Just some of the many activities available to the area visitor are;
AGATE PICKING: Minnesotaís State Stone is the Lake Superior Agate and it can be found in abundance in the Barnum area. Rock collectors can find various sizes and colors of the Agates along any gravel road or gravel pit. Best hunting is after a rain when the colored patterns of the Agate show contras tingly to the gravel.
CANOEING: The area's many clean, freshwater lakes and rivers are available for those who prefer the quiet exploration of these waters by canoe. Additionally, the easy access to the Moosehorn River - which flows right through the center of Barnum and the close proximity of the Kettle River, provide the devoted canoeist plenty of opportunity to view the wilderness while enjoying a river trip.
BICYCLING: Barnum is connected to the Willard Munger State Trail. This paved trail, that stretches from Hinckley to Barnum, over 37 miles, serves as a bike and hiking trail during the summer and snowmobile trail in the winter. The trail will eventually be completed and be connected to Duluth, thru Jay Cooke State Park. When completed, persons could then ride a paved trail all the way from Hinckley to Duluth.
BOATING: Recreational boating and water skiing are available on all the area lakes, most of which are equipped with public landings.
SWIMMING: Bear Lake County Park, located on the outskirts of the City of Barnum, offers public swimming in a lifeguard supervised area. Water fun for the youngsters or deep water for the advanced swimmer is available. In addition, most area lakes provide for fine public swimming.
FISHING: Anglers have the opportunity to fish for a variety of species in the many area lakes. Crappies, sunfish, northern pike. walleyes, bass, muskies and trout are available in the area lakes. There is also the annual "sticker run" in the Moosehorn River and some area lakes. A valid Minnesota fishing license is required for those anglers over the age of 16, however, there is no license required at Bent Trout Lake, a privately owned lake that is stocked with trout. It Is located near Barnum.
ICE FISHING: The season doesn't have to end when the summer does. Try your favorite lures during the winter months on all the area lakes with ice fishing.
SNOWMOBILING: A nearly unlimited network of snowmobile trails is available from Barnum. All trails in the area are regularly groomed and provide the enthusiast yet another opportunity to explore the great Northwoods.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: Groomed trails specifically for cross-country skiers are located within a 20 minute drive from Barnum at Jay Cooke State Park or just 5 miles away at Moose Lake State Park.
HUNTING: From white-tailed deer to small game, ducks and geese to bear, the hunting is great around Barnum. Minnesota hunting licenses are required and hunters should receive permission to hunt on private lands. Abundant public land for hunting is available.
BERRY PICKING: There's nothing quite like the taste of homemade jams, jellies or pies. The Barnum area provides you the opportunity to pick strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, juneberries or any number of wild berries common to the area, during the summer months you can pick to your heart's content.
GOLFING: There are two, nine hole golf courses in the immediate vicinity of Barnum, Twenty-nine Pines Golf Course is located in neighboring Mahtowa and in adjoining Moose Lake, another nine hole course is located. Both course have grass greens, clubhouses and are open to the public.
OTHER WINTER TIME FUN: ATV trails. sleigh rides, ice skating and ice fishing are all available to the winter guest of Barnum.
OTHER SUMMERTIME FUN: With tennis courts, baseball diamonds and playground equipment, there is no lack of things to do during the summer months in Barnum.
MOTHER NATURE'S BEST: Looking for a day trip to see the fall colors. The many hard and softwood forests in the Barnum area, combined with area lakes, makes for a picturesque setting when the leaves change color in the fall. |
